Pandemic Plants

The world is strange, scary, and incredibly overwhelming right now. In trying times like this, it is dire that we focus on our mental health. I myself struggle more than I like to admit, and I’m here to share some of the things I’ve done that have helped me immensely (of COURSE it involves houseplants!)

Plants are captivating, powerful, intriguing, and just really freaking awesome. I started collecting houseplants when I was at one of my lowest points in life, and they have turned me around. Becoming a plant parent brings so much light (literally) into your life; and I’m here to share four ways plants can help during these pandemic times:

1. Watching them grow. There is something about the thrill of seeing a new leaf growing in on a plant that is just so satisfying. Maybe it’s a sense of happiness knowing that the plant is happy and that you are caring for it correctly, or maybe it’s how cute the new leaves look?

2. Research. When diving into the wonderful world of plants, it is important to research about the plants you purchase. Reading and learning more about plants is a fantastic way to take your mind off of things, and increase your knowledge about your little green friends! Plus it makes you a better plant parent.

3. Retail Therapy. I mean… this one explains itself, right? Plant shopping is easily my favorite thing to do, and trust me it becomes addictive! Discovering new greenhouses that have tons of plants to choose from is like mining for gold. There are always hidden treasures, and taking home that perfect new plant just floods joy into your life (its truly euphoric).

4. Care. Caring for my plant collection is a daily task that is always changing. This routine of potting, misting, watering, checking for pests, pruning, etc. is a big responsibility that is both fun and challenging, and a great way to immerse yourself in green and forget about the world for a while.

I am not just talking about houseplants either! I also grow my own vegetables outdoors. Seasonal gardening gives instant payoff with quick growth and then provides you with a bountiful harvest that not only limits your trips to the grocery store, but also allows you to enjoy food that YOU have grown yourself. Honestly there is nothing better than homegrown vegetables. Outdoor and indoor gardening (flower beds, vegetables, herbs, houseplants, etc.) is a hobby that will change your life for the better. My houseplants and vegetable garden have seriously been my therapy through these strange times, and I cannot imagine my life without them.

Brady Karg

Hi, everyone! My name is Brady and I am a graduate student currently studying parks and resource management and environmental education. My undergraduate degree is in biology. In the past year I became a vegetarian and have been trying to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. Growing up I always had a passion, interest, and respect for nature that has shaped my studies and hobbies. I have planted, maintained, and harvested vegetable and herb gardens with my family for as long as I can remember, and I started collecting tropical houseplants a little over 3 years ago. Along with plants, I am an avid birder, photographer, and artist.
